Skills Database Design

Well Relentless is ill but I am not so I am continuing on with getting one of the most core systems up and running.

This system is of course the Skills system. The skills system is something that the players will love and hate at the same time. Especially if you think that just because everything is available to your character forever, you won’t find it easy to do everything.

The first skill of them all comes under the Lumberjack skill tree. Skills are organised in to groups but the groups are purely there for the players benefit. Lumberjack consists of 4 skills. Felling, Limbing, Bucking and Hewing.

Each skill level gained in any skill makes it harder to gain the next level in any other skill. So you could be the best at Bucking but crap at Hewing. Or awesome at both but pretty crap at Felling. You can basically focus on the bits you want to do yourself rather than aiming to be the best Lumberjack.

These ‘limits’ are applied across the board. The deduction is simple. EXP gained from doing any task that comes under any skill is reduced by a certain percentage. A percentage which is the same for every skill and increases with every level gained.

We are mean.

But this is to add depth…tactics…and above all…….social skills and teamwork. The clever guy is the guy who focuses on what everyone else hasn’t and established himself (or herself) and a specialist of some kind. The best in the trade at …. cutting off branches.

So chopping down trees is on its way. Keep an eye on the site.

Annor GENESIS: Screenshots

Well I have repaired the forest area after the tag issue. The coast area can wait since it is unlikely I will be working on coast related things for quite some time. The forest area is currently set to grow upto 100 trees and 100 plants. There are 14 seeder trees in the area at the moment so expansion is pretty rapid. Plants grow more in closer groups to the trees to there will be more seeds.

Anyhow, here, have a bunch of screenshots. They start off showing things at the growing stages and work their way up until they are fully grown. However please note that I messed up once again. This time by forgetting to delete the seeder trees after the first run (when the database had only 28 trees). This means that the growth limit was reached in half the time and that the trees didn’t spread out as much as they would normally do. Future screenshots will demonstrate that (have since sorted this problem).

Forest and Genesis Tests

On Tuesday I received the Forest and camp site maps from Relentless. I didn’t get a chance to look at them until last night but I can say from a terrain point of view they look good. The problem is they are empty and contain no plants, rocks, trees or animals.

I did a few tests and seeded them for a run on GENESIS. Unfortunately due to an area tag issue there were problems when re-loading the game. Both the beach and the forest were sharing tree data. I have sorted out the problem and informed Relentless but I need to re-seed both areas and let them grow from scratch.

I did manage to grab two screenshots. So here they are:-
